        Preparing to Type

        Scientific Word divides large projects into subdocuments, which all are put together by a master document.
        To download the master document and all the subdocuments click here. (The master document is called mymaster.tex)

        This master document is formatted in thesis specifications. If you open it, you will notice it contains no text, just grey boxes that call the different subdocuments that make up the document.

        It also contains grey boxes that look like this: . If you double click on these boxes you will see that they contain TeX commands. It easy to incorporate TeX commands in Scientific Word. Click the TeX button on the Field toolbar. A dialog box will appear where you can insert the TeX code.

        To edit the code after you have inserted it, double click on the grey box.

        The TeX boxes on the master document contain code to set the page numbers of the thesis. The master document does not contain the Title page, Approval page, Permission for duplication page, or Acknowledgement page.
        It starts with the Contents page, which is set at page number "v". If this is not the fifth page of your document (before the Introduction), you must edit the TeX code in the box:

          1. Double click on the TeX box
          2. Go to the \setcounter{page}{5} command
          3. Change the {5} to the page number of the table of contents
          4. Press OK

        Editing subdocuments

          1. On the standard toolbar, click the Open button .
          OR
          From the File menu, choose Open.

          2. Select the subdocument you want to type or edit from the Thesis folder that was downloaded from this webpage.

          3. Choose OK. The Title bar will show the name of the master document and the name of the subdocument.

          4. Type as you would any other Scientific Word document.

          5. From the File menu, choose Save to save the document.

        Each subdocument which is already contained in the master document is blank. After you have written the subdocument, open up the master document and press the Typeset Preview button . The subdocument should now be part of the master.

        Making an existing document a subdocument

          1. On the standard toolbar, click the Open button.
          OR
          From the File menu, choose Open

          2. From the File menu, choose Import Contents

          3. Select the existing document you want to use as the subdocument

          4. Choose OK

          5. Save the subdocument

        The original document is unchanged, and its contents are now also in the subdocument.

        Inserting a subdocument into the master document

          1. Open the master document

          2. Move the insertion point where you want to include the subdocument.

          3. On the field toolbar, click the Subdocument button

          From the Insert menu > Field > Subdocument

          4. If you want to choose a directory other than the one containing the master document, select the directory

          5. Name the subdocument. Choose OK

        Previewing

        Previewing gives you the oppourtunity to see how your finished document will look.
        To preview your document press the Typeset Preview button . This will work whether you want to preview the entire master document, or just a subdocument.

        When you preview the document, it compiles it with LaTeX, and displays it on a DVI viewer. You can also print from this screen.
