The Department of Mathematics & Statistics is deeply saddened to share the passing of Professor Emeritus Paul Cabilio on July 20, 2026, at the age of 81. [belvederefh.com]
For many of our alumni, Paul was more than a professor. He was a mentor, advisor, department leader, and friend whose impact extended far beyond the classroom.
Paul joined Acadia University in 1973 and spent more than three decades helping to shape the Department of Mathematics & Statistics before and post retiring in 2007. He served as Department Head for three terms and played an important role in the remarkable growth and development of the Statistics program, and in earning a national reputation for excellence in undergraduate education in both mathematics and statistics. His contributions extended nationally through his service to the Statistical Society of Canada, which recognized him with its Distinguished Service Award in 2010. See the obituary to Paul by Chipman and Genest published in the August edition of Liaison of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC)

Those who studied with Paul will remember his gift for making statistics approachable, his sense of humour, and his genuine interest in his students' success. Former students speak warmly of his clear explanations, engaging teaching style, and the encouragement he provided both inside and outside the classroom. As one former student recalled, “He challenged us to think critically, ask questions, pursue new ideas, and strive for excellence, while always making us feel valued and supported”.
Colleagues remember Paul as a generous mentor who cared deeply about students and junior faculty by freely sharing his knowledge and wisdom and helping create opportunities for them to succeed. Even after his retirement, Paul continued his support by co-supervising students and coauthoring several reputable referred publications with his students and colleagues.
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Paul was remembered for his infectious laugh, intellectual curiosity, love of gardening, passion for orchids, enjoyment of cooking, and delight in sharing good food and conversation with family and friends. He brought warmth, kindness, and enthusiasm to every aspect of life. See the tribute to Paul by his collaborator Mayer Alvo.

The legacy Paul leaves behind can be found in the many alumni whose careers and lives were influenced by his teaching and mentorship, in the colleagues he supported, and in the department he helped build. We are grateful for his decades of service to Acadia and for the lasting impact he had on our community.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Juta, their children Adrian and Nora, their grandchildren, and the entire Dr. Cabilio family.
